Created in 2021 at the height of the COVID-19 lockdown, Lounge Nineteen emerged from a period when physical movement was … Read more Created in 2021 at the height of the COVID-19 lockdown, Lounge Nineteen emerged from a period when physical movement was severely restricted, and the inner world became an increasingly important space of exploration. In the painting, Ara Deinde depicts himself seated alone in an imagined, seemingly endless lounge that resembles a train. The space functions as a metaphor for the endless train of thoughts that occupies the mind, while the act of sitting alone becomes an invitation to confront, interpret, and digest those thoughts.

The loneliness of the lockdown is central to the work, but the painting extends beyond the experience of isolation. The enforced stillness also created an unusual opportunity for introspection. With the distractions and demands of ordinary life temporarily suspended, there was room to sit with oneself and examine thoughts, memories, anxieties, and possibilities that might otherwise remain unattended.

Reflection is embedded throughout the visual language of the painting. The lake reflects the sky, the glass panels reflect the interior of the lounge, and the furniture, fixtures and architectural elements multiply endlessly through repetition and perspective. Almost everything in the environment appears in multiple forms, suggesting a world continuously generated and regenerated through perception. Yet at the centre of this elaborate and fantastical space, the figure appears only once.

This singularity is deliberate. The surrounding environment can be understood as an extension of the subject's interior life, a manifestation of thought, imagination and psychological movement. The endless lounge therefore exists somewhere between an external environment and an internal landscape. It is a place constructed mentally through the act of self-reflection.

Lounge Nineteen ultimately considers solitude not simply as an experience of absence, but as a space of possibility. It presents a moment in which the mind can wander freely, construct its own environments, and encounter itself without distraction.
