Sir Alfred James Munnings (1878-1959) is regarded as one of England’s finest 20th century painters of horses. His work is immensely popular for its highly realistic yet painterly qualities. His paintings have sold for enormous prices. In 2007 his large oil on canvas The Red Prince Mare sold for $7,848,000.

He was a leading British painter, celebrated for his mastery in depicting horses and hunting scenes. Born in Mendham, Suffolk, he developed from a young age an intimate connection with the English countryside, animals and rural life, which would deeply mark his work. Although he lost the sight in one eye at the age of twenty, he continued to paint with exceptional tenacity. Munnings trained at the Norwich School of Art and later joined the Newlyn School, a community of artists based in Cornwall, where he perfected his naturalistic style and his mastery of color and light. During World War I he was assigned as a war artist, an experience that further cemented his reputation. His lively technique and deep anatomical knowledge of the horse made him one of the most sought-after equestrian portraitists of his time. In 1944 he was appointed president of the Royal Academy of Arts, a position from which he firmly defended figurative art, opposing the emerging modernist currents. In addition to his pictorial work, Munnings left a three-volume memoir in which he recounted with humor and lucidity his life as an artist, horseman and lover of the English countryside. His legacy lives on as a symbol of a pictorial sensibility that captured with strength and elegance the spirit of the traditional equestrian world.
