It is a stunning example of a mid-century baluster-form ceramic table lamp by Frederick Cooper Chicago. It features an expertly hand-painted multi-color scene showcasing a pheasant/bird of paradise nestled among vibrant tobacco leaf flora. The large, many-petaled bloom with a central seed pod (represented by the brown, circular, textured center) is a classic depiction of a lotus. Frederick Cooper is known for high-quality, hand-painted ceramic lamps featuring intricate floral and Chinoiserie designs. The textured "crazed" or "crackle" finish on the body is a hallmark of many high-end vintage ceramic pieces from this Chicago-based maker. The use of lotus flowers, along with other botanical elements and sometimes birds (like egrets or peacocks), is a defining characteristic of Frederick Cooper’s Asian-inspired collections from the late 20th century.
The base boasts a highly tactile, textured (feels like sand paper) slip-glaze finish set upon a dark, custom-carved wooden stand. The stand is obviously hand carved even to the point of a couple of small chisel nicks. It has been professionally refreshed with pristine, clean wiring and plug for modern home safety and is accompanied by its era-authentic cream silk/linen shade featuring an elegant fluted edge, an aged brass harp, and a polished bright brass finial. ("A.I." suggests that the harp is original and the finial was replaced with a newer version when the lamp was rewired). The shade is a stunner; gorgeous vintage cream colored linen silk fabric ( no polyester here). Base and shade are in immaculate, clean and gorgeous condition.
Frederick Cooper was known for treating the lamp and shade as a unified art piece. He frequently utilized high-end custom fabrics, including pleated silks and tailored linen shades with scalloped or unique shapes to complement hand made specific lamp forms. Hand-carved dark hardwood with crisp brass hardware fittings at the neck is a hallmark of their Mid-Century Chinoiserie collections.
This lamp, including base and stand is 13" in height and, with the harp, is 23" in height. The base is 8 "wide. The shade is 13" in height and 18" wide. See less
