The reverse is stamped “SEACRAFT” and retains an original Mahogany Association, Inc. label guaranteeing that all exposed wooden parts are solid genuine mahogany. The association-issued label bears penalty-contract number 247, giving the tray meaningful surviving documentation of its material and period construction.

The chart centers on Stamford Harbor and extends across Shippan Point, Westcott Cove, Cove Harbor, Long Neck Point, the Darien River and the surrounding waters. Soundings, navigational lights, reefs, harbor channels, shoreline roads and marine facilities give the surface the intricate descriptive character of an authentic working chart rather than a simplified decorative map.

A prominent compass diagram is marked “VAR 12°30′ W (1950),” recording the chart’s 1950 magnetic-variation reference. The pale blue waterways, precise black cartography and time-softened ivory ground create an atmospheric counterpoint to the reddish-brown mahogany surround.

The construction is particularly appealing in its maritime details. Thick twisted rope follows the rounded rectangular perimeter, while elongated brass-toned cleats mounted at either end serve as carrying handles. The combination of mahogany, rope, brass and coastal cartography has the tailored character of a vintage yacht-club or harbor-house accessory.

IDENTIFICATION AND DATING
The underside bears a rectangular “SEACRAFT” stamp identifying the maker. Although the mark is faded, the complete name remains discernible in the supplied close-up photograph.

The reverse also retains a red-and-green Mahogany Association, Inc. label stating that all exposed parts are guaranteed to be solid genuine mahogany. The label was issued under penalty contract and bears number 247.

The nautical chart includes the notation “VAR 12°30′ W (1950).” This indicates the reference year for the magnetic variation printed on the chart; it does not independently establish the exact year the tray was assembled.

The circa-1950s–early-1960s date is an informed estimate based on the 1950 chart reference, SeaCraft stamp, Mahogany Association certification, solid-mahogany construction, natural rope trim, brass cleat hardware and known period nautical-tray forms. It should not be interpreted as a documented factory date.

MAP IDENTIFICATION
The chart depicts the northern coast of Long Island Sound around Stamford Harbor, Connecticut. Clearly visible locations and features include Stamford, Stamford Harbor, Shippan Point, Stamford Light, Westcott Cove, Cove Harbor, Long Neck Point, Darien River, Smith Reef, The Cows, Old Greenwich and Greenwich.

The printed details include depth soundings, rocks, reefs, harbor channels, navigational lights, shoreline roads, marine facilities and a compass variation diagram. The geography corresponds with the western portion of the historical chart area later identified by NOAA as “North Shore of Long Island Sound—Sherwood Point to Stamford Harbor.”

The chart appears to be a period reproduction incorporated into the tray rather than a detachable navigational chart currently suitable for marine use.

MAKER’S MARKS AND LABELS
The underside is stamped:

“SEACRAFT”

It also bears a Mahogany Association, Inc. certification label reading substantially:

“All exposed parts guaranteed solid genuine mahogany. Genuine mahogany grows only in West Indies, Tropical America and West Coast Africa. This label issued under penalty contract. Number 247. Mahogany Association, Inc.”

The SeaCraft stamp identifies the maker. The Mahogany Association label certifies the exposed wooden components as solid genuine mahogany; it is not the manufacturer’s name.

Number 247 is recorded as the penalty-contract number appearing on the association label. It is not represented as a SeaCraft model or serial number.

CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
The tray has a broad, rounded rectangular surround made from exposed solid genuine mahogany. A printed nautical chart is mounted directly within the recessed central field and covered with a clear protective surface finish.

Heavy twisted natural-fiber rope is secured around the exterior perimeter with small metal fasteners. Two elongated brass-toned nautical cleats are mounted at the shorter ends and function as carrying handles.

The underside is covered with a brown embossed or textured backing material bearing the SeaCraft stamp and Mahogany Association certification label.

ACQUISITION DOCUMENTATION
The tray was cataloged at auction as a “Vintage Mahogany Associates Nautical Map Inspired Tray,” measuring approximately 10 inches across its shorter dimension.

Subsequent inspection establishes SeaCraft as the maker through the surviving underside stamp. “Mahogany Associates” in the auction title is understood to refer to the Mahogany Association, Inc. certification label rather than the manufacturer.

The chart has also been identified more specifically as a view of Stamford Harbor and the adjoining Connecticut shoreline of Long Island Sound.
