Duncan” at the lower right, depicting two traditional sailboats at anchor beneath a sweeping, cloud-filled sky. The larger gray-hulled vessel is painted “Astor” across its bow, giving the atmospheric marine composition a memorable focal detail.

The boats sit low on calm blue-green water, their tall masts, flags and finely drawn rigging rising through the broad horizontal scene. A sailor in a vivid yellow coat occupies the smaller vessel at right, while a leaning mooring post at left, a distant shoreline and a solitary sail on the horizon create balance and depth.

Duncan builds the sky with loose, layered strokes of gray, cream, pale turquoise and softened ochre. Broken reflections beneath the boats repeat the darker hulls and yellow sails, lending movement to the foreground without disturbing the painting’s quiet mood.
