Birch frame with padded seat and backrest, geometric patterned upholstery, and perforated dark wood side inserts. Made in Sweden, 1920s.
The marbled birch frame gives this early 20th-century Swedish sofa a strong material presence, enhanced by the large wood surfaces and the natural variety of grain. Under the armrests, perforated dark wood inserts interrupt the light birch surfaces with a geometric pattern, introducing one of the sofa's most distinctive decorative details. The slender legs lighten the structure, while the geometric patterned upholstery echoes its ornamental component. Controlled shapes and stylized decoration trace the sofa back to Swedish Jugend, a Nordic interpretation of Art Nouveau, characterized in the early 20th century by a more restrained and geometric language compared to the sinuous continental expressions.
