A charming, original print from 1988 depicting an expressive and nostalgic circus scene featuring two clowns on a balance beam. The work was created by German printmaker Emil Pelz. It masterfully captures the contrast between the superficial cheerfulness of the performance and the deep, melancholic emotions hidden behind the stage makeup.
The work was created using the refined technique of intaglio printing (most likely etching combined with aquatint), as evidenced by the clear, deep impression of the printing plate and the subtle, textured background. The rich textures of the costumes—the classic Harlequin diamonds and polka dots—are emphasized by meticulous, precise linework.
This is a rare collector’s item from a very limited, closed edition. In the lower left corner is the handwritten print number 34/90, while the lower right corner bears the artist’s original pencil signature along with the date: “E. Pelz 88.”
The print is mounted in a classic period wooden (or wood-like) frame with solid backing protection, which has kept the paper in excellent condition.
