The composition shows the Cathar fortress dominating its rocky mountain setting, painted with expressive brushwork and rich impasto in a luminous palette of blue, ochre, cream and green.

Merlet was a French painter, writer and art critic with strong connections to southwestern France. He founded an art gallery in Toulouse in 1918.

Condition: Good overall vintage condition. The wooden panel shows small age-related chips, minor edge wear and small losses around the corners and borders. These are visible in the photographs and are consistent with the age of the work. An old pencil drawing is present on the reverse.
