A pair of louis xv-style bedside tables, crafted around 1970 in solid cherry wood. The curved top, fluted corner pilasters, and continuously curved legs create a calmly proportioned, clearly structured form, in which ornamentation is limited to the frame and drawer fronts. Historical context: the bedside table developed in 18th-century france as a distinct type of furniture placed next to the bed, serving as a surface for candlesticks, books, water glasses, or personal items. Early forms featured a closed or semi-open lower compartment, reflecting the bedroom usage of the time; with the expansion of bathroom fixtures in the 20th century, this compartment evolved into an open shelf. In 20th-century french furniture design, the louis xv forms continued to be produced in serial production, often in solid cherry wood and usually as a pair to complement the bed and chest of drawers in a bedroom set. Features: continuous open shelf between the drawer and frame, closed at the back. Fluted corner pilasters with upper volute finials flow seamlessly into the curved legs with scroll feet. The design is in the louis xv style with typical rocaille features: a curved top with projecting corners and a profiled edge, a curved frame with a central volute carving, and cabriole legs with scrolled feet. The drawer fronts feature a recessed frame molding, the ends of which terminate in small volutes. The ornamentation is understated and limited to the frame, front, and pilasters, allowing the silhouette, rather than the decoration, to dominate. A simple, dark-colored metal knob serves as the handle. Both nightstands are identical in construction and matched in size and finish. Dimensions: height 70 cm × width 41 cm × depth 32 cm (each nightstand). Material and condition: solid cherry wood, metal knob. Well-preserved with age-related wear. There are a few fine, light scratches and minor scuffs visible on the drawer fronts and edges of the cabinets. Both drawers run smoothly, and the frames are sturdy. Inspected and cleaned. Included: two nightstands. The decorative items shown in the photos (candlesticks, picture frames) are not included in the sale.
