"generally positioned as a three-quarter figure and in a frontal view, strobel, in his stereotypical division of the picture plane, almost entirely dispensed with spatial and depth effects, plasticity, background scenery, and individualized physicality. Instead, he drew from the same repertoire [sic] of props for clothing, hairstyle, colors, fabrics, accessories, flowers, fans, jewelry, and other items were arranged around the most important and, for his client, most informative formal element—the face. Using this technique, strobel created a montage of frozen "dressing mannequins," whose lifeless, wooden bodies became carriers of valuable information. Painted with fine brushstrokes and a love of detail, these so-called "accompaniments" provide information about the wealth, professional career, culture, and prominent position of the portrayed person within the hierarchical structure of the imperial city of schwäbisch gmünd society" (monika boosen / gabriele holthuis (2001): the portrait in the baroque.
