Executed in oil on mahogany wood panel, the painting displays refined pictorial quality, particularly evident in the rendering of the animals’ fur,

the details of their faces, and the expressiveness of their eyes. Dating from the late 19th century.

At the center of the composition stands an elegant adult cat, accompanied by a small kitten in the foreground; to the right, a third cat, with orange fur,

 is depicted drinking from a bowl. The domestic setting is enriched by a decorative rug and the bowl, creating a pleasant atmosphere of everyday life.

The palette is developed through the warm tones of brown, red, ochre, and gold.

The scene is rendered with great pictorial sensitivity and attention to detail, typical of animal painting between the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The antique painting is signed lower right J. Le Roy, a French animal painter renowned for his refined depictions of cats and kittens.

Jules Gustave Le Roy (1856-1921) was born in Paris and trained under Jules-Adolphe Goupil.

The Musée d’Orsay identifies him as a peintre de chats, or cat painter, documenting his participation in the Salon des Artistes Français from 1898 to 1913.

Le Roy regularly took part in Parisian exhibitions and in 1899 became a member of the Société des Artistes Français; in 1904 he received an honourable mention.

The artist generally preferred small and medium-sized paintings, depicting cats and kittens within domestic interiors.

The artwork is further enhanced by a beautiful gilded frame in genuine gold leaf, original and contemporary to the 19th-century painting.

Both the antique painting and the frame have been professionally and carefully restored.
