The French modernist architect and designer Robert Mallet-Stevens designed this lounge chair for M. Cavrois’s villa in Croix, near Lille, in 1932. This chair embodies his vision that all furniture should be functional for contemporary life, simple and suitable for mass production.
The interior designer Andrée Putman, who founded Ecart International in 1978, began reissuing rare pieces from the 1930s and 1940s, thereby contributing to the revival of this chair. The model she reissued was inspired by the one at Villa Cavrois and was available in various colours, including black and white.
Robert Mallet-Stevens was born in Paris in 1886. Mallet-Stevens’ career comprises a relatively small number of completed works, mostly private residences. His first significant commission was the villa for Paul Poiret in Mézy. He utilised metalworking techniques (flat and tubular) and designed chairs that represented a synthesis of the architect’s modernist and technical influences. This piece has an attribution mark,
