Executed with Streets’ distinctive expressive approach, the work features dramatically rendered architecture beneath a swirling sky, surrounded by utility poles, automobiles, signage, and the dense visual character of Baltimore’s urban landscape. Thick, energetic paint application and distorted perspective give the composition a wonderfully immediate, almost animated quality.

Signed “ALAN” lower left. The reverse bears a handwritten inscription identifying the subject as “The Oldest Penitentiary in the United States, Baltimore, Maryland,” and is dated March 6, 2009.

Alan Streets (b. 1969) is a British artist born in Roehampton, London. Known particularly for his expressive urban landscapes, Streets developed a distinctive career painting city scenes directly from the streets. His work is characterized by energetic compositions, exaggerated perspective, bold architectural forms, and highly expressive skies.
