A striking example of the Renaissance Revival aesthetic of the Wiese workshop, this exceptional brooch by Jules and Louis Wiese is crafted in 18-karat yellow gold and composed as a playful procession of sculpted Renaissance-style masks interspersed with lustrous possibly natural pearls. At the center, a large, softly iridescent pearl provides a dramatic focal point, flanked by two smaller pearls, each framed within quatrefoil-form gold settings.
The surrounding goldwork is particularly evocative, with finely modeled grotesque and character masks rendered in high relief. Each face is individually articulated, displaying distinctive expressions and period-inspired coiffures or headdresses, giving the brooch an almost theatrical quality. The alternating portrait-like masks and pearls create a wonderful sense of rhythm and symmetry, while the richly textured gold lends the piece considerable depth and dimension.
The brooch bears the French eagle's head assay mark for 18-karat gold, a French maker's mark for Jules and Louis Wièse, and is signed WIESE, identifying it with the celebrated Parisian jewelry house founded by Jules Wiese and subsequently continued by his son Louis Wiese. The Wiese firm was renowned for its highly sculptural jewelry and its masterful interpretation of Neo Renaissance and Neo Gothic styles, often incorporating boldly modeled figures, masks, architectural motifs, and richly textured goldwork.
Weighing 11.24 grams, this beautifully preserved brooch is an especially charming example of Wiese's ability to transform historical ornament into wearable art. Its combination of sculptural gold masks, glowing pearls, and highly individualized faces gives it an unusual character and makes it an appealing addition to a collection of 19th-century French Renaissance Revival jewelry.
