hans richard von volkmann (1860–1927) came from halle and was the son of the famous surgeon and poet richard von volkmann, whose collection of fairy tales, "träumeereien an französischen kaminen" (first published under the pseudonym richard leander in 1871), is still read today. He received his art training at the leading academies for landscape painting in düsseldorf and, from 1888, in karlsruhe, where he settled permanently and long chaired the karlsruhe artists' association. Around 1900, he enjoyed national and international recognition and was represented at all major art exhibitions. However, his great popularity was primarily due to his prints, which showcased his considerable talent for drawing. Here, it was especially his colored lithographs that became widely popular at the time as artistically sophisticated yet inexpensive wall decorations.

volkmann came to hesse to paint early on, specifically to willingshausen. He first visited in 1883 from düsseldorf – at the suggestion of his fellow student adolf lins. From then on, he was a regular visitor to willingshausen, rarely missing a summer to paint outdoors with his fellow painters and capture the scenic beauty with brush or pen. Volkmann always depicted the farmers who cultivated the land and the then still numerous shepherds with their flocks in harmony with nature, integrated into the cycle of the seasons. He also created virtuoso portraits of the villagers. He immortalized himself on the famous door of the willingshausen artists' studio and contributed numerous humorous verses and drawings to the artists' albums, which provide insight into the convivial activities of the artists' colony during its heyday.

his travels took him to italy several times and to all regions of germany, with the secluded eifel—especially the kyll valley and gerolstein—and the swabian alb being particularly appealing to him, in addition to the schwalm region. He also captured the diverse moods of the different landscapes in the odenwald, the vogelsberg, the reinhardswald around sababurg, and the weser uplands, sometimes shrouded in wind and clouds, sometimes bathed in warm sunlight. His paintings have rightly been described as having a lyrical quality, and volkmann has been characterized as a painter in the post-romantic tradition.
