There are no maker's marks or year stamp. The chest was found in The Netherlands but appears to be similar in craftsmanship to 19th Century (1800s) chests from France. Frankly, it looks like a treasure chest from the middle ages\. but chances are it's not that old. Every bit of the box is brimming with magnificent detail. Each of the metal fittings are hand hammered. There are no machine made parts. The interior of the box has remnants of a former liner that has been lost to time. Time has weathered this box, giving it a deeply rich character. The box is intact and opens and closes with no problem. There is no key for the lock. Look closely to see the back hinge is decorated with a band of hide. The top also has hide. There is even a bit of hairs still stuck to the hide. Such a special box. Ideal for use as a display piece or to store linens or towels for guests.
