This … Read more Original carved wood animal sculpture signed “Picallo” underneath the base, attributable to Maxín Picallo (born 1940), Spanish Galician sculptor.

This unique piece represents a stylized lizard, created from a naturally shaped branch or root whose organic form has been directly incorporated into the sculpture.

Its elongated body, very long tapering tail and short legs create a highly expressive and sculptural silhouette. The surface retains a beautiful aged patina together with traces of old polychromy, including green on the body and red around the mouth.

The carving is deliberately raw and organic, preserving the natural irregularities of the wood, age cracks, old holes and visible tool marks. The tail is secured to the base with an old slotted screw visible underneath.

Signed “Picallo” under the base.
