In this large-format and masterfully executed painting, the artist presents the expressive portrait of an elderly woman in deep, dignified grief. The detailed, realistic style of painting, in the New Objectivity movement, captures every nuance of her face, marked by life's experiences, as well as the fine texture of her clothing. She wears the historically fascinating, austere communion dress of the Schwalm region, with the characteristic, enormous black veil over the small headdress (Stülpchen or Betzel). with white gloves, she carefully holds a hymnal, covered by a traditional blue bookcloth, before her chest. In the background stretches an idyllic, gently rolling landscape with fields and trees, perfectly situating the rural habitat of the woman in the Schwalm region. Furthermore, an original exhibition booklet from the "Art Exhibition of the Relief Organization for German Fine Arts within the Nazi People's Welfare" is included, which serves as clear proof of provenance, indicating that this work was presented at one of these traveling exhibitions during that period and framed or submitted at its place of origin in Berlin. This authentic, museum-quality piece of art and contemporary history is an absolute highlight and possesses enormous collector value for lovers of German folk costume painting and realistic portraiture from the mid-20th century.
