A striking Brutalist ceramic sculpture by Dutch artist Joop Puntman, created for Ambacht Haalderen circa 1960. An excellent example of the bold, sculptural language associated with Dutch studio ceramics of the period, the piece is characterised by its highly abstract, architectural form and dramatic openwork construction.
Composed of interconnected, irregular geometric elements, the sculpture has an almost totemic, organic quality, with expressive cut-outs and angular forms creating a fascinating interplay between positive and negative space. The heavily textured surface enhances its Brutalist character, while the deep brown and near-black glaze gives the work a rich, earthy presence.
Puntman’s approach combines primitive and architectural influences, resulting in a sculpture that feels simultaneously abstract, figurative and structural. The changing contours and open spaces invite the eye to move around the piece, making it particularly effective as a freestanding decorative work.
A superb example of mid-century Dutch Brutalist ceramics, with considerable sculptural presence and strong period character.
