Jörn Stoya does not work with oil or acrylic paint, but with pure pigments. This means he needs no binders. The colors are always unmixed. The artist places the canvases on a table and applies the pigments or color dust to the paper by hand, rubbing, layering, and blurring them. The paintings emerge without sketches or lines, inspired by color to color. Only when the overall harmony is pleasing does Jörn Stoya finish a work. The artist completely liberates color from representational elements, instead exploring questions of its effect and power in his works.

For Jörn Stoya, color is almost physically tangible. Sometimes the colors are densely packed together, sometimes they blend seamlessly into one another. Clearly defined areas of color repeatedly meet blurred, shimmering fields. with his specific approach to color, Stoya creates a powerful sense of materiality and spatial depth: often isolated on a background, the colors appear to float.
