Le Corbusier (1887–1965) was a Swiss-French architect, urban planner, painter, draftsman, sculptor, and furniture designer. He was one of the most influential architects of the 20th century. Le Corbusier created the Open Hand Monument as a symbolic structure within the Capitol Complex of the Indian city of Chandigarh. It is the emblem of the Chandigarh government and symbolizes "the hand to give and the hand to receive. Peace and prosperity, as well as the unity of mankind." The metal structure is 14 meters high and weighs 50 tons. Our "Open Hand" is considerably smaller and serves as a decorative table sculpture, presumably handmade. Its origin is unknown. The hand is made of a stone-like material, lacquered black. The base is made of blue lacquered wood. It is in good condition. The hand has some dull patches. The base shows significant signs of wear. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
issues arising from misattribution
