A vibrant and beautifully preserved antique American braided round rug dating to the second quarter of the 20th century, circa 1940s, showcasing a radiant color palette of red, white, blue, green, yellow, and gray woven together in concentric braided bands that create a dynamic sense of movement and texture. Lovingly made from repurposed clothing and fabrics the American folk tradition at its most sustainable and personal this rug carries within its spiraling bands the story of the materials that were sacrificed to create it: garments worn thin, textiles finished with their first life but given new purpose.
American round braided rugs of the 1930s and 1940s, made during the Depression era and World War II years when thrift and resourcefulness were national virtues, are now treasured as works of folk art that document both the material culture and the values of their era.
