This vintage Southwestern Serape blanket from the third quarter of the 20th century showcases the timeless beauty of traditional Mexican textile artistry in a composition of alternating band designs of great rhythm and visual warmth. The serape woven on a simple horizontal loom from wool and cotton is one of the most distinctive and beloved textile forms of the Mexican and Southwestern United States weaving tradition, its bold stripe patterns and warm natural dye palette evoking the landscape and cultural richness of the region.
The alternating band design creates a dynamic visual rhythm that feels completely at home in mountain cabin, country cottage, bohemian, and Southwestern interior design schemes the same design vocabulary that connects Mexican serapes to Navajo blankets, Moroccan kilims, and the great stripe traditions of the worldwide folk textile heritage.
