From the weaving workshops of Coahuila in northern Mexico comes this magnificent vintage Saltillo Serape kilim, handwoven in the late 19th to early 20th century in one of the most celebrated textile traditions of the Americas. The classic Saltillo lozenge medallion design a central diamond surrounded by four subsidiary motifs is rendered here with exceptional refinement against a stunning French blue field accented with red, ivory, black, and tan. The Saltillo Serape occupies a unique place in the history of North American textiles, bridging Spanish Colonial and indigenous weaving traditions, and the finest examples are collected with the same seriousness as the great Oriental rugs of Persia and Turkey. This piece is equally powerful displayed on the floor or mounted as a wall tapestry.
