A substantial vintage Chinese ceramic camel sculpture inspired by Tang Dynasty funerary figures. The camel is modeled with an animated upward-turned head, elongated neck, detailed mane and tail, and an elaborate saddle incorporating a wonderfully expressive mask-form ornament.
The piece is finished in a softly aged cream crackle glaze with ochre, celadon-green, and brick-red accents. Particularly appealing details include the deeply modeled saddle tassels, sculpted facial features, decorated hooves, and textured mane.
At approximately 20 inches tall, this is a notably large example with considerably more decorative presence than the smaller Tang-style camel figures commonly encountered.
An impressed mark is present on the underside; maker remains unidentified.
