Original French mid-century gouache by Pierre MAS, created and signed in Paris in 1961.
This expressive still life centers on a golden ochre pear surrounded by loosely interpreted florals and sweeping foliage. MAS builds the composition through energetic brushwork and palette-knife-like passages in deep navy and cobalt blue, emerald and blue-green, vivid crimson, cream, ochre, and earthy brown. The dark ground and saturated color give the work a particularly strong graphic presence characteristic of postwar European modernism.
Painted in gouache on paper, the work remains on the artist’s original sheet. It is signed within the composition “P. MAS 61” and additionally inscribed in pencil beneath the image “Gouache originale – Pierre MAS – Paris 1961.” These original inscriptions provide an appealing record of the work's medium, artist, place, and date.
A striking one-of-a-kind work for a collection of French modernist, mid-century, abstract, or expressionist art. Its rich jewel-toned palette would also make it particularly effective when professionally matted and framed.

The original paper shows age-related toning/discoloration and minor handling wear along the margins and edges, as expected for an unframed work dating to 1961. These characteristics are primarily confined to the surrounding sheet and do not detract from the painted composition. Please review photographs closely for the condition of the original paper and edges. less
