A substantial neoclassical cast plaster bas-relief depicting Bertel Thorvaldsen’s The Dance of the Muses on Helicon. The lively classical composition features Apollo with his lyre and swan alongside an animated procession of muses and figures.
Executed in deeply modeled plaster with an aged ivory and warm ochre-toned finish that emphasizes the sculptural details and gives the piece the appearance of an architectural fragment. Particularly beautiful viewed from an angle, where the depth of the figures becomes apparent.
The relief has substantial scale and weight, measuring approximately 29.7 inches wide and weighing approximately 18 pounds. The reverse retains older hanging hardware and a handwritten “Bar Door” notation, presumably relating to a former installation or placement.
