Similar items were also a staple in Japan, though with some small variations in material choice.

These incredibly skilled tradespeople, most often women, passed down their basket-weaving knowledge through generations. And while these gathering baskets originally served a utilitarian purpose, the fact that their sturdiness and beauty have survived so long is a true testament to the artistry of these folk crafts.

This piece does show natural signs of aging, such as a few areas of frayed thread and color changes on the wood rim.

All in all, this lightweight yet study antique basket would make the perfect statement piece by itself or used as a planter, blanket basket, magazine holder or organizer for odds and ends.

This rare find would fit beautifully in a home of similar handmade, rustic, or boho treasures, like that of a Mexican, Native American, Tribal, Asian, Eclectic, African, or even Coastal theme. See less
