Executed in house paint on plywood, the work depicts one of Tolliver’s distinctive stylized human figures against a warm off-white ground, accented with gray, pink, and vivid red details. Signed “MOSET” along the lower edge.

The reverse retains an informative provenance sheet from Southern Visionary Art, which identifies the work as “Black Lady” and notes that it was part of a collection of Tolliver paintings purchased from Laurice Culp in 2003. According to the accompanying documentation, Culp operated a piano and combination furniture store in Montgomery, Alabama, and acquired Tolliver paintings through trades with the artist.

Tolliver is one of the most recognized figures in American Southern self-taught and Outsider art. Following a debilitating workplace accident in the 1960s, he began painting at his Montgomery home, frequently using ordinary house paint and found or discarded wood. His distinctive figures, animals, plants, and everyday subjects ultimately brought him national recognition.

Presented unframed as originally conceived, with hanging hardware attached at the upper edge. Vintage surface wear, abrasions, paint loss, and edge wear are present and consistent with the age, materials, and working methods of the artist. Please refer to photographs for condition. See less
