Satsuma ware originated in Kagoshima Prefecture in southern Japan during the late 16th century, produced by Korean potters brought over by the local feudal lord. By the late 19th century, Satsuma pottery featuring elaborate crackle glazes and opulent gold enameling became immensely popular for export to the West, particularly during the Meiji period.
