Beautiful 1955 Holy Angels Edition of The Holy Bible, published by The Catholic Press, Inc. of Chicago and edited by Reverend John P. O’Connell.
This substantial mid-century Catholic family Bible features an ornate red binding richly decorated in gold, with four color religious portraits incorporated into the front cover. The spine is similarly decorated in gilt and identifies the volume as The Holy Angels Edition.
The Bible retains its beautiful gilt page edges, red satin ribbon marker and original gold presentation/storage box.
Inside are numerous full-color religious illustrations and reproductions of works by James Joseph Jacques Tissot, along with decorative illuminated-style title and presentation pages. The Old Testament uses the Douay-Challoner text, while the New Testament and Psalms use the Confraternity text.
The copyright page is dated 1955 and identifies The Catholic Press, Inc. The volume was published with the approval of Samuel Cardinal Stritch, Archbishop of Chicago.
This particular Bible was presented to Roger Evans Sherwood by Mary Suzanne and Roger Sherwood Jr. for Father’s Day in June 1956, providing a wonderful piece of its original family history.
