A beautiful graduated collection of seven handwoven Philippine nesting baskets attributed to the Tiruray-or Teduray-basket-weaving tradition of southwester Mindanao. It is increasingly uncommon to find large, visually cohesive sets preserved together.
Diaimeter & Height: (inches)
This graduated set ranges from a substantial 14.5-inch-diameter basket (14.5 inches tall) to the smallest 8-inch diameter basket (6 inches tall).
The baskets nest together for compact storage.
Each basket transitions from a structured square base to a round, gently flared opening. Natural and darkened split bamboo are intricately double-woven into bold geometric patterns, while carefully wrapped rims and reinforced feet provide beautiful finishing details. Because each basket was formed by hand, subtle variations in shape, color and pattern give every piece its own character while maintaining the harmony of the set.
Tiruray basket makers are celebrated for their complex geometric weaving and remarkable technical precision. Graduated nesting baskets became especially sought after through the Philippine craft and export market during the late 1960s and 1970s. This set is estimated to date from the 1970s based on its construction and comparison with documented examples; its exact date and original maker are unknown.
Acquired as part of a larger collection of Philippine basketry, this set is one of my favorites. I love the way the seven baskets create a sculptural rhythm when arranged from smallest to largest—the craftsmanship becomes increasingly impressive as the entire progression is revealed. Displayed together, they make a dramatic statement across a long console, mantel or shelving wall; individually, they are equally useful as planters, vessels or textural decorative objects. They also nest neatly inside one another for compact storage.
The baskets remain in very good vintage condition overall, retaining strong shapes, richly contrasting patterns and intact decorative character. Minor patina, color variation, wear and occasional natural-fiber irregularities are consistent with their handmade construction and age. Please review the photographs closely as part of the condition description.
A striking combination of traditional craftsmanship, graphic design and warm organic texture, this seven-piece collection offers a rare opportunity to acquire an extensive example of vintage Philippine basketry in one beautifully coordinated set

Five of the seven baskets are exceptionally well preserved, with clean, tightly woven interiors, strong original shapes, intact wrapped rims and reinforced bases. Two baskets have a few small areas of localized fiber loss at the interior bottom, with a few corresponding broken or lifted weave ends. This wear is limited, does not compromise the basket’s overall structure and is not readily visible when displayed upright. Minor patina, tone variation, surface marks and natural-fiber irregularities are consistent with age and handmade construction.
