Stripped it back and uncovered … Read more Found this chest covered in paint and had a hunch there was something good underneath. Stripped it back and uncovered tiger stripe quartersawn oak, the real deal, not a stain effect. Finished it with walnut stain and Tried & True wood varnish to bring the grain forward while keeping it looking like the antique it is.

Five graduated drawers with a serpentine wave front, a shaped molded top, curved apron, and flared French legs, all in the French Provincial style that was popular in quality American oak furniture in the early 1900s. Every drawer is hand dovetailed and still glides smoothly after roughly a century of use. Frame and legs are solid, no wobble anywhere.

In the interest of full transparency: the hardware is attractive but most likely not original to the piece. I made a few minor patches where the wood had been damaged on the back panel. Drawer interiors are lined in sage green as I was unable to fully remove the previous stain. .

A genuinely well built piece of American oak furniture with real presence, would work beautifully as a dresser, entry chest, or linen storage. See less
