DYK” at lower left and painted in oil on canvas at an unusually decorative panoramic scale. The view depicts the three-arched Pont Saint-Michel crossing the Seine, with the varied roofline of the Île de la Cité leading toward the twin western towers of Notre-Dame in the distance.

The composition is identifiable as the historic view from the Quai des Grands-Augustins. A closely corresponding circa-1890 painting by Albert Lebourg in the Musée Carnavalet is titled “Le pont Saint-Michel et Notre-Dame, vus du quai des Grands-Augustins,” confirming the bridge-and-cathedral alignment. The present bridge’s three masonry arches further distinguish it from the twelve-arched Pont Neuf.

The artist organizes the city as a rhythmic procession of steep slate roofs, chimneys and narrow façades painted in coral, brick red, butter yellow and muted cream. Their warm colors are set against a broad turquoise-blue sky, dense green foliage and the dark reflective water of the Seine.

Expressive brushwork and palette-knife passages animate the entire surface. Broad strokes model the bridge and embankments, while broken touches of white, green and blue suggest light moving across the water. The architecture is deliberately abbreviated rather than tightly rendered, giving the painting the immediacy and energy of a postwar impressionist cityscape.

The three arches create a strong horizontal anchor across the lower center, while the receding island buildings draw the eye toward Notre-Dame. A dark tree trunk at the right edge acts as a repoussoir, framing the view and intensifying the luminous open sky beyond.

The large 52-inch width gives the painting substantial presence above a sofa, console, sideboard, mantel or library cabinet. Its palette bridges traditional and modern rooms especially well, coordinating with dark wood, aged brass, velvet, leather, blue-and-white porcelain, warm neutrals and time-softened textiles.

The original broad frame is a significant part of the presentation. Continuous scrolling foliate ornament is finished in antiqued gold over reddish-brown undertones, producing the layered, mellowed surface prized in collected interiors. The frame’s scale balances the panoramic canvas and makes the work ready for immediate display.

The visible signature is confidently read as “V. DYK.” Research located the documented Dutch painter Wim or Willem Leendert van Dijk (1915–1990), whose works appear under related name forms and in both European and Brazilian subjects. However, accessible auction descriptions commonly record his signature as “Wim L. Van Dijk,” and no label, certificate or exact signature comparison establishes authorship of this canvas. It is therefore offered responsibly under the visible signature only, without a definitive full-name attribution.

The bridge is identified as Pont Saint-Michel rather than Pont Neuf. The decisive features are its three masonry arches and the alignment of Notre-Dame beyond the Île de la Cité frontage. The viewpoint closely corresponds with Albert Lebourg’s museum-documented “Le pont Saint-Michel et Notre-Dame, vus du quai des Grands-Augustins,” circa 1890, in the Musée Carnavalet.

A documented Dutch painter, Wim or Willem Leendert van Dijk (1915–1990), produced postwar landscapes and cityscapes and appears in auction records under several related name forms. The spelling and abbreviated signature on the present canvas are not an exact documented match in the accessible evidence, and market databases also maintain a separate, sparsely documented “V. Dyk” entry.

The work is therefore cataloged as signed V. Dyk, artist unidentified. Any association with Willem Leendert van Dijk should be considered provisional unless confirmed through qualified expert examination or documentary evidence.

CONSTRUCTION DETAILS
The oil painting is executed on woven canvas and mounted on an expandable wooden stretcher with traditional corner keys. The canvas appears unlined, and no patch is visible on the photographed reverse.

The assembly retains an older hanging wire. A faint inventory-style notation, possibly “197,” is visible on the reverse but has not been independently identified.
