Standing an impressive 15¾ inches high, the figure is hand-inscribed beneath the base, “Hand Painted by Mozelle.”

The elongated male figure is represented with arched brows, almond-shaped eyes, a slender mustache and an exceptionally long pointed beard. His composed expression, elaborate clothing and formal bearing give him the dignified presence of an imperial court figure.

A sweeping ivory robe envelops the body in deeply modeled folds. Raised geometric borders trace the edges of the sleeves and garment, while large cloud-like scrolls emerge along the lower sides and reverse. These sculptural details create substantial visual movement through relief and shadow while preserving the elegance of the predominantly white surface.

Deep teal green defines the broad collar, layered waist sash and full trousers. Brilliant scarlet accents appear across the headband, sash panels and curled shoes, bringing a controlled burst of color to the restrained ivory ground. The face and hands are painted in a warmer cream tone, with black detailing articulating the eyes, brows, hair and beard.

At his waist, the Emperor holds a pale ceremonial pouch gathered beneath his hands, together with a dark teal book-like accessory. The arrangement of long articulated fingers, tied fabric and layered garments creates an especially decorative focal point at the center of the composition.

Gold-tone ornament is applied selectively throughout. A raised pendant-like device embellishes the chest, while metallic fringe finishes the red-and-teal sash panels. Holland Mold was founded in Trenton, New Jersey, in 1946 and produced ceramic molds rather than finished decorative objects. Its molds were distributed primarily to ceramic studios and home crafters, who cast, glazed and decorated the resulting pieces individually. This production history explains why the same Emperor form survives in widely varied palettes and frequently carries the personal signature of its decorator.

The underside inscription identifies Mozelle as the individual responsible for painting this example. No surname, date, studio name or separate Holland Mold impression is visible. Accordingly, the figurine is attributed to the Holland Mold form through comparison with matching documented examples rather than through a factory mark on this particular piece.

Its substantial height gives the figure the presence of a decorative sculpture rather than a small collectible. Display it on a console, mantel, commode, library table, pedestal or within a generously proportioned bookcase. It would also serve as a dramatic counterpoint to a large table lamp, gilt mirror or arrangement of framed artwork.

Comparable examples share the present figure’s approximate 15-to-16-inch height, long pointed beard, flowing ceremonial robe, pouch held at the waist, elongated head covering and formal standing pose. Documented versions of the form carry dates including 1969, 1970, 1979 and 1983.

Holland Mold’s documented company history states that it did not produce finished ceramics. The company manufactured and distributed molds primarily for use by ceramic studios and home crafters, although some forms were also used in commercial pottery production.

The company’s production model resulted in individually cast and decorated versions of the same form. Surviving examples consequently display varied colors, finishes, inscriptions and decorator signatures.

Because no molded or incised Holland Mold name is visible on this example, the attribution is based on its correspondence with documented examples and should not be interpreted as a factory-mark identification.

SIGNATURE AND INSCRIPTIONS

The wording identifies Mozelle as the painter or decorator of this particular ceramic casting. It does not establish that Mozelle designed, sculpted or manufactured the original form.

Extensive research did not locate sufficient evidence to identify Mozelle’s surname, studio, location or professional biography. Several artists and ceramicists with the given name Mozelle were considered, but none could be connected to this figurine through a matching signature, provenance, documented Holland Mold association or comparable object.

The figurine should therefore be cataloged as hand-painted and signed by Mozelle without assigning the decorator an undocumented surname or established-artist attribution.

SUBJECT IDENTIFICATION
The figure is conventionally identified in marketplace and collection records as the “Emperor” from a Holland Mold Emperor-and-Empress pair.

This designation identifies the ceramic model and its intended presentation. It should not be interpreted as an authenticated representation of a particular Chinese emperor or historical person.

DATING NOTES
The probable late-1960s–1970s date is an informed estimate based on dated examples of the same Holland Mold form, including comparable figures documented from 1969, 1970 and 1979.

A separately decorated example dated 1983 demonstrates that the mold remained in use into the early 1980s. Because the present inscription does not include a date, its precise casting and decoration dates remain undocumented.

MATERIAL NOTES
The figure has been described as porcelain and displays a refined, glossy glazed surface. Without physical testing, a documented factory specification or an identifiable mold record, it cannot be conclusively distinguished from another white-bodied ceramic material.

“Glazed ceramic, described as porcelain” is therefore the most technically responsible material description.
