A striking vintage chinoiserie emperor figurine, attributed to Holland Mold and individually hand-painted in glossy ivory, deep teal, scarlet red, black and gold. Standing approximately 16 inches tall, this glazed ceramic figure is inscribed beneath the base, “Hand Painted by Mozelle.”
The flowing ivory robe features deeply modeled folds, raised geometric borders and cloud-scroll ornament. A long pointed beard, elaborate head covering, ceremonial accessories and red curled shoes give the figure its distinctive character. Gold-tone accents embellish the chest and sash, while an integrated black plinth anchors the sculptural silhouette.
The form corresponds to documented examples of Holland Mold’s Emperor-and-Empress pair, which ceramic studios and individual decorators finished in their own palettes. This example bears no visible Holland Mold mark; the attribution is based on matching forms. Mozelle’s signature identifies the decorator, whose full identity remains unknown.
Estimated circa late 1960s–1970s, the figure brings color, height and personality to a console, mantel or library bookcase. Its ivory ground and jewel-toned accents pair beautifully with blue-and-white porcelain, lacquerware, antique brass and dark woods—a distinctive addition to chinoiserie, Hollywood Regency or collected traditional interiors.

No obvious … moreGood vintage condition with age-appropriate surface imperfections. The tall ceramic figure remains structurally stable and presents beautifully overall. No obvious major cracks, breaks, missing fingers, substantial structural losses or repairs were observed across the supplied photographs. Fine glaze crazing is visible throughout the figure, particularly across the ivory robe, raised cloud-scroll ornament and white head covering. Several longer craze lines can be seen upon close examination. These appear consistent with aging of the glazed surface rather than open structural fractures. The white head covering displays concentrated gray-brown discoloration, scattered speckling and surface marks, most noticeable across its upper and side portions. Additional small marks, faint discoloration and isolated specks are present elsewhere on the ivory glaze. The hand-painted red, teal, black and cream areas retain strong color and gloss. Minor brush irregularities, light rubbing, small marks and localized pigment variation are visible upon close inspection and are consistent with individualized hand decoration and vintage use. The gold-tone chest ornament and sash fringe remain decorative and visually prominent. Their surfaces display localized rubbing, irregularity and minor finish loss. Some uneven edges are inherent in the modeled tassel forms rather than necessarily representing later damage. The integrated glossy black plinth exhibits light scratches, scuffs and surface rubbing, together with small edge and corner abrasions and localized glaze loss. Expected shelf wear, discoloration and manufacturing irregularity are present on the underside. Faint mold seams and minor variations in the modeled and glazed surfaces are visible in places and are consistent with the figure’s method of manufacture. Please review all photographs closely, particularly the glaze crazing, discoloration on the head covering, hand-painted details, gilded ornament, raised robe decoration, black plinth and signed underside. less
