Vintage Nelson Lewis Navajo Sand Painting – "Thunders and Water Monster" (24" x 24")
A museum-quality, large-scale authentic vintage Navajo ceremonial sand painting executed by recognized Diné master artist Nelson Lewis (Shiprock, New Mexico).
Titled "Thunders and Water Monster," this striking 24" x 24" composition depicts sacred deities and guardian beings rooted in traditional chantway healing ceremonies (Shootingway). The design features four radiating ceremonial figures surrounding a central golden solar emblem, flanked by intricate feather motifs, directional cornstalks, medicine pouches, and geometric guardian borders.
Technique & Medium:
Handcrafted using finely ground, naturally colored crushed sandstones and mineral pigments meticulously hand-poured onto a solid artist board. The piece exhibits extraordinary relief, sharp line work, and intact raised sand texture throughout.
Provenance & Markings:
Hand-inscribed and signed by the artist on the reverse:
"Thunders And Water Monster"
"This is a Navajo Religious Ceremonial Sandpainting design. The painting is made out of natural color sandstone."
"Nelson Lewis, Box # 2298, Shiprock, New Mex. 87420"
Retains the original hanging hardware on the reverse.
Dimensions:
24" W x 24" H x 0.5" D
Condition:
Excellent vintage condition. Sand relief remains exceptionally sharp and stable with no bare patches, gouges, or moisture damage. Colors are rich, vivid, and unfaded. The particle board backing is solid and flat with clean corners.
Shipping & Handling:
Given the delicate raised-sand surface, this piece will be packed with extra care using a rigid face-shield standoff, heavy cushioning, and a sturdy reinforced box so nothing touches or scrapes the face during transit.
