This assembled set of six English George III–style dining chairs brings together four late 18th-century examples with two later chairs chosen for their closely related design. The graceful neoclassical form, popular during the final decades of the 1700s, has an elegant lightness that works beautifully around both traditional and more contemporary dining tables. Subtle variations in color, proportion, and carving give the set the collected character of chairs brought together over time.
Crafted in mahogany, the chairs feature gently curved tablet backs outlined with fine string inlay, reeded uprights and rails, and three slender turned and fluted splats with carved leaf details. Straight tapering legs continue the clean neoclassical lines. Five seats are upholstered in rich red leather and one in warm brown leather, all finished with aged brass nailhead trim; the differing upholstery adds to the set’s relaxed, assembled appeal.
The chairs are in nice antique condition with wear consistent with age and use, including scratches, scuffs, finish variation, minor losses, evidence of old repairs, and differences among the frames. The leather upholstery shows rubbing, creasing, marks, edge wear, and areas of cracking, particularly to the brown seat, with some loose or exposed fabric beneath its front edge. Beautifully timeworn yet practical, this characterful set is ready to lend warmth, history, and understated elegance to a modern dining room. 32h x 20w x 17d seat height 19
