The original image was created as part of the monumental 18th-century documentation of antiquities excavated at Herculaneum near Naples, Italy. Giovanni Battista Casanova produced drawings of archaeological finds for the series, with Carlo Nolli among the engravers responsible for translating the discoveries into published plates.

This later decorative reproduction presents the classical horse in crisp monochrome against a light ground, elevated on an architectural pedestal in the manner of an antiquarian engraving.
The print is professionally framed beneath glass with a wide gray fabric mat and a substantial deep burgundy-maroon faux snakeskin / leatherette frame. The combination gives the classical image a sophisticated 1970s decorator look and considerable wall presence.
