This atmospheric coastal scene depicts a solitary figure walking among dark shoreline rocks at twilight, carrying a small glowing lantern beneath a luminous pink, violet and blue evening sky. Sheehan’s characteristic handling of light and shadow creates the quiet, contemplative mood for which his Tonalist landscapes are known.

Born in Boston in 1950, Dennis Sheehan works in the tradition of the French Barbizon School and American Tonalism, drawing particular inspiration from 19th-century landscape painters including George Inness. Sheehan is a member of the Guild of Boston Artists, the Salmagundi Club in New York and the American Tonalist Society. His paintings are held in prominent public and private collections.

Signed “Sheehan” at lower right. The reverse of the canvas is hand-inscribed “Shore Stroll, Evening” and “10 x 20.”
