An ornate Japanese Satsuma demitasse service by Shuzan, dating to the Meiji period (1868–1912). Each piece is densely hand-decorated in the celebrated Thousand Flowers, or Mille Fleur, pattern, with overlapping chrysanthemums and other blossoms rendered in jewel-like polychrome enamels.
Fine gilt outlines define the individual petals, while raised white moriage beading and extensive gold decoration lend the surfaces exceptional texture and brilliance. The warm ivory earthenware body displays the finely crackled glaze characteristic of Satsuma pottery.
The bases bear the Shuzan signature within a black-and-gold cartouche beneath the cross-in-circle Shimazu family crest. A striking example of Meiji-period Japanese decorative arts, ideal for display in a traditional, maximalist, or Japonisme-inspired interior.
