Beautiful matched pair of antique Staffordshire spaniel mantel dogs in a deep glossy black Jackfield-type glaze with hand-applied gilt decoration.

Each seated spaniel measures approximately 10.5 inches tall and features molded fur detail, curled tail, gilt collar, pendant and chain decoration, with additional gold accents throughout. The dogs form a traditional opposing/facing pair.

The underside shows an exposed reddish-brown earthenware body beneath the dark glaze, along with large open bases and age-related manufacturing irregularities. An old handwritten dealer/collector label on one dog identifies the pair as “Jackfield, circa 1900.” Based on their construction, materials, surface wear and comparison with documented examples, they are attributed to the late 19th to early 20th century.

Condition:
Very good antique condition overall with expected age-related wear. There is rubbing and loss to portions of the original gilt decoration, surface wear and manufacturing/glaze irregularities consistent with age. Please examine all photographs carefully, particularly the underside and close-up images, as they form an important part of the condition description.

No maker’s mark has been located.

The original old handwritten identification/price labels have been left in place and have not been removed.
