Titled “map of the county of cambridge, from an actual survey made in the years 1832 & 1833,” the map was produced from the greenwoods’ detailed survey of the county. Cambridgeshire and the isle of ely are shown with contemporary wash colouring, identifying the various administrative divisions. The map is richly detailed with towns, villages, roads, rivers, estates and other topographical information. Decorative elements include an elegant compass rose, a list of the hundreds and liberties of the isle of ely, a detailed table of explanations and a large engraved vignette of ely cathedral at lower right. An impressive example of early 19th-century english county cartography and an attractive historical record of cambridge and its surrounding region. Old fold lines with general age-related toning, scattered spotting, surface soiling and areas of discoloration and offsetting, particularly to the left side and lower portion of the sheet. Some creasing and handling wear, with occasional marginal closed tears and repairs. The engraved image remains clear and detailed, and the contemporary wash colouring, decorative title, compass rose and ely cathedral vignette remain attractive.
