We are pleased to offer this spectacular pair of large Italian wall or ceiling lights, dating to circa the 1970s and crafted from thick polychrome hammered glass and gilt iron. This particular type of Italian lighting is often mistakenly associated with the Brutalist movement because of the seemingly raw and tactile treatment of the materials. In this exceptional pair, however, the deliberately irregular surfaces are combined with an elegant sculptural design. Thick pieces of multicolored hammered glass are individually set into gilt iron structures, creating an organic, floral composition with a distinctly sculptural presence. The gold-painted iron is not smooth or polished, but deliberately textured and rough to the touch. Its richly aged surface is further enhanced by beautiful areas of green verdigris oxidation, adding depth, character, and a naturally aged appearance to the metalwork. The polychrome glass elements are arranged almost like fragments of a Gothic stained-glass window. Each thick piece of hammered glass is individually shaped and slightly different from the others, with a beautifully irregular surface that gives the fixtures a highly tactile quality and creates extraordinary variations in texture, color, transparency, and light. When illuminated, the textured glass produces a magical, colorful glow, casting dramatic patterns of light and creating an atmospheric effect that changes beautifully according to the intensity of the light. Designed with four light sockets each, these versatile fixtures can be installed either as large wall sconces or mounted directly to the ceiling as sculptural flush-mount lights. There is no original adhesive label or manufacturer's mark to definitively confirm their attribution. However, their design, construction, and distinctive use of hammered glass are reminiscent of the work of important Italian lighting and glass manufacturers known for this type of material treatment. They may potentially be attributed to Poliarte or Longobard, although this remains unconfirmed. A remarkable example of 1970s Italian sculptural lighting, combining textured gilt iron, richly colored hammered glass, and an organic floral form to create an exceptionally atmospheric and decorative lighting effect.
