Provenance: May 13, 2011, Van Ham, Cologne, Auction [Old Masters (Sale 298)], Lot 671 (“Interior with Soldier and White Spitz”).

An expert opinion (dated February 9, 2016) by Mr. Andreas Schroyen, M.A. (Düsseldorf), who examined the painting in person, is available. According to Mr. Schroyen, "the depiction, in terms of its subject matter, composition, and stylistic features, corresponds to works from the oeuvre of the Swiss painter Marc Louis Benjamin Vautier the Elder. The signature matches those on authenticated works."

1845 Briefly received drawing lessons from Jules Hébert (Geneva)

1847 Began an apprenticeship as an enamel painter in Geneva (with Jacques Aimé and Charles Louis Francois Glardon)

1848 Entered into a four-year contract with an enameller, where he painted watches and brooches. In his free time, he pursued artistic endeavors and came into contact with other artists (including Jacques Alfred van Muyden, Francois Diday, Alexandre Calame, Jean-Léonard Lugardon, and Joseph Hornung)

1850 Applied to the Düsseldorf Art Academy, where he was accepted on his second attempt, but then attended the academy for only eight months (under Carl Ferdinand Sohn and Heinrich Mücke)

1851 Switched to Rudolf Jordan's studio as a private student and worked concurrently as an illustrator

1853 Briefly left Düsseldorf and traveled with Ludwig Knaus, visiting, among other places, the Black Forest and the Bernese Oberland

1856 Extended stay in Switzerland and Paris

1858 Return to Düsseldorf and marriage to Bertha Louise Euler (1837–1886)
