Beautiful and rare antique art nouveau / jugendstil lidded soup tureen, made by b&g imperial zinn in germany in the early 20th century.
an impressive example of german art nouveau metalwork, featuring sculptural geometric handles, a raised pedestal base and elaborate grapevine and foliage decoration typical of the period. The dark aged pewter surface and contrasting polished details give the piece wonderful depth and character.
the underside bears the b&g imperial zinn* maker's mark.
*b&g / imperial zinn was produced by the crefelder metallwaren-fabrik bitter & gobbers gmbh, founded by peter bitter and wilhelm gobbers around 1900 in krefeld, germany. The company operated for only a relatively short period, approximately 1899–1910, and is known for its jugendstil pewter wares. The firm also collaborated with french artist maurel.
