Carlo Scarpa’s furniture often carries the same architectural thinking found in his buildings: material, proportion and construction are allowed to speak for themselves. The ‘Scuderia’ table is a particularly clear example, conceived for a historic setting and later brought into production by Bernini.
Scarpa originally conceived the Scuderia table in connection with his 1972 work on the stables of Villa Valmarana ai Nani in Vicenza. Bernini introduced the model into production in 1977, near the end of Scarpa’s career.
Design
A broad rectangular top gives this large version an almost architectural presence. Across its surface, carefully arranged walnut grain creates three elongated, darker fields, bringing rhythm to an otherwise restrained composition. Rather than adding ornament, Scarpa makes the timber itself the principal visual element.
Supporting the top are paired cylindrical legs positioned close to each corner. Their rounded profiles contrast with the horizontal geometry above and give the table an unusual cadence when viewed from different angles. Similar double cylindrical supports are documented on other examples of the Scuderia model. from below, the construction appears especially direct: a thin horizontal plane resting on a series of substantial vertical elements.Scarpa’s approach here reflects his broader interest in the meeting of materials, joints and architectural forms. Made for dining yet conceived with the presence of a piece of architecture, the table works equally well in a residential dining room or a more restrained interior project. A handwritten signature or mark is visible along the side of this example; signed examples of the model are documented in auction records.
with its generous proportions, expressive walnut surface and characteristic paired legs, the Scuderia reduces the dining table to a small number of carefully considered elements. It belongs to Scarpa’s late body of furniture and retains a close connection to his architectural practice.
Condition
The table is in good vintage condition, showing light traces of use and age, including small surface marks visible in the photographs. The walnut retains an even warm tone and the construction presents well throughout. The legs still need some work at the bottom. Some water damage occured there at a certain point.
