A highly collectible example of Italian Postmodern design, the Latonda chair is defined by its extraordinary sculptural steel-tube construction and elegant geometric composition. Designed by acclaimed Swiss architect and designer Mario Botta, the chair transforms a simple continuous steel tube into a distinctive architectural form. The bent black steel tube traces a fluid, continuous curve through space, creating the characteristic double circular structure around the seat. The two inclined circular forms are interrupted at their centre and elegantly embrace the original cognac-coloured leather seat, creating a sophisticated contrast between the warm leather and the dark tubular frame. The construction is a beautiful example of Botta’s design philosophy: essential geometry, structural clarity and carefully controlled proportions. Nothing is unnecessary. The chair’s visual strength comes from the relationship between the continuous steel line, the circular forms and the suspended leather seat. Despite its substantial sculptural presence, the open tubular construction gives the chair a remarkably light and airy appearance. from different angles, the curves create changing geometric compositions, making the Latonda as much a sculptural object as it is a functional armchair. The chair rests on two tubular elements that visually complete the continuous line of the frame, reinforcing the impression that the entire structure has been created from a single flowing gesture. Designer Mario Botta was born in 1943 in Mendrisio, Switzerland, and became internationally recognised for his distinctive architectural and furniture designs. His work is characterised by strong geometric forms, architectural structure and a sophisticated dialogue between solid and empty space. The Latonda chair, designed in 1987 for Alias, is one of his notable furniture designs and is an excellent representation of the Italian Postmodern design movement of the 1980s.
