Crafted from hand-thrown terracotta in greece by a.p.i.s. During the mid-to-late 20th century, this substantial piece is a masterful homage to ancient athenian black-figure pottery from the 7th to 5th centuries bc. The vibrant terracotta clay provides a rich, warm backdrop for the detailed scene painted in matte black and white pigments. At the center of the composition, a standing figure near a flaming column plays the aulos, an ancient double-reed flute, while a second figure sits gracefully on a rocky outcrop playing a lyre. Delicate stylized botanical elements and a small bird fill the negative space, adding vitality to the classical vignette. The central medallion is elegantly framed by an inner band of alternating palmette and lotus motifs, which is in turn surrounded by a broad outer border featuring a bold, traditional greek meander or key pattern. The vibrant terracotta background is a striking hermès orange, adding a distinct feeling of hermès sophistication to the piece. The reverse side of the plate proudly displays the concentric rings inherent to the hand-throwing process, alongside the hand-painted workshop inscription "a.p.i.s. Made in greece." thoughtfully designed for interior display, the back foot ring was pierced prior to firing and remains fitted with a wire for secure wall hanging. See less
