This work is a preparatory study for the composition now held in the collection of the Musée du Monastère Royal de Brou, acquired by the museum in 2020. The finished, signed version passed through the London gallery Thomas Agnew & Sons prior to its museum acquisition.
Pen, brown ink and oil on cardboard, in a period gilt frame. Height 8 1/4 in. (21cm) x Width 10 7/16 in. (26.5cm).
Bouton, co-inventor of the Diorama with Louis Daguerre, is represented in major institutional collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
