this authentic example of soviet decorative design features three stylised matryoshka, or russian nesting-doll, figures arranged in a beautifully balanced ascending composition. Their distinctive silhouettes transform the functional candleholder into a sculptural object with a strong graphic presence.
each figure is enriched with finely cast textural decoration: framed faces, hammered and chased-effect surfaces, geometric borders and flowing architectural motifs. The three figures appear to rest their heads upon their hands, creating an unusual and immediately recognisable design.
the original dark-brown patinated surface is enlivened by subtle warm metallic highlights that catch the light and emphasise the intricate relief. Its substantial weight and elongated profile give the piece an impressive presence on a console, mantelpiece or dining table.
